Lava Beds NM

Location: 150 miles northeast of Redding, California
Features: lava tubes, ice caves

This is a fantastic place to explore. Lava Beds National Monument is actually only a huge lava field, but below the ground are lots of caves, tubes and even ice caves. It's a fascinating thing to go only 100 feet into the ground an to have ice there while the outside temperature is in the high 90's. So you should defenitely bring a flashlight (and backup batteries) and go down in some of the caves. If you feel like, you can even take guided tours through the huge cave system of Lava Beds National Monument.
