USA - Major Attractions and Hikes of the South
Atlanta, Georgia
Atlanta, also known as the centre of the south, is the boom town and major city of the old south.
The major attractions of Atlanta are Coca Cola and CNN in Downtown, Midtown, the Martin Luther King Center and the Stone Mountain Park in the east of Atlanta.
Downtown and Midtown are the two regions with the highest skyscrapers. A view from the highest floor of the Westin Hotel over the city is a must. Midtown is probably best seen from Piedmont Park at 10th Street and Piedmont Ave.
Coca Cola is a funny thing to do. Best part of the museum is the one, where you can taste thedifferent kinds of softdrinks from all over the world. Try the southamerican or japanese mixtures...you'll never forget that aweful taste...
If you are into television, take a guided tour at CNN headquarters at Marietta St. and Techwood Drive. It's not really sensational but you'll get a nice impression of the Turner Network.
At the Martin Luther King Center you'll get lots of interesting information about him and his work. His house of birth and graveyard are also there.
Stone Mountain Park is a Recreation Area only half an hour to the east of Atlanta. It is a huge granite mountain, claimed to be the largest free standing one in the world, with a manmade relief of the generals of the civil war. During the summer season they use it as a screen for laser shows. The top of the mountain can be reached either by a one hour walk or by a lift, taking you there in a couple of minutes. From that lift you'll also get a nice view of the relief.
You can also do lots of different kinds of sports, from biking over swimming to playing tennis.
So what's going on in Atlanta at night? Well...go to Buckhead and find out for yourself! This place is packed with bars and clubs and on saturday nights it's really hard to even walk there, because of the incredibly high number of people on the streets and in the clubs...it's a real fun place!
For the ones of you who don't like crowds, check out Little Five Points, another bar district a couple of minutes east of Downtown. But don't confuse it with Five Points, the train station in Downtown...
Last not least, a nice place to relax on sunny weekends is Lanier Lake, one hour northeast of Atlanta, close to Gainesville. You can do watersports there, go swimming or simply take a sunbath at the beaches...
