my sister, overlooking Alesund

Most of the homes and buildings in norway are made of wood due to the huge amount of forests norway has to offer. There is, of course, one catch to building houses like that...they burn down quite rapidely, once on fire. Such devastating fires happened several times in Alesund, the biggest one destroying the complete city at the turn of the 19th century. The major of Alesund therefore released a law which enforced everybody to build their houses of brickstones only.
Due to this decision, Alesund is today one of the best kept cities in the world containing this architectural style, called "Jugendstil". It's indeed a pleasure to walk through the city center looking at the beautiful houses. But not only due to the special architectural style but also because of its unique location on small islands, Alesund is the most attractive city I've seen on my trip.
Take a walk on the mountain "Askla" and you'll get a good impression of the beauty of this small town.
