Akureyri is the second largest town on the island (14000 citizens) and a lot nicer than Reykjavik.
Situated on the beautiful Eyjafjoerdur with the highlands to the south, it's an ideal place for one day trips. While we had to wait for the bus, we 'climbed' the mountain Sulur, from where you have nice views of the fjord and the town.
You can get a short description of the trail at the bus station from the very friendly staff.
